Thanks to an international outcry, Iranian officials apparently have “suspended” the death sentence against Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, convicted in 2006 for the crime of “adultery” (even though her husband already had died at the time of her allegedly “illicit” relationship). Yet her life remains hellish.

This week, it was reported that, even as she was waiting on death row, Ashtiani got 99 lashes for the further crime of appearing in a Times of London photo without a headscarf. The Times now concedes that the photo actually was of another woman — adding an additional level of surreal suffering to what already was a singularly pitiful case.

This is on top of the 99 she got back in 2006, which would put her at a total of 198
